⭐ From President John Terrell

Greetings LRGC Members,

April was a busy month, and the rollercoaster weather certainly presented a challenge. It’s great to see all weekend events back in full swing—come out and enjoy some time at the club.

Speaking of events at the club, please note that the date for 10 Stand Sporting Clays in May has been changed from 5/24 to 5/31.

The Easter Bunny event was a big success, and the Mel Walts and Dave Steen Flea Market also went very well. Thanks to everyone who attended.

John Besack and his crew planted over 120 pine trees along the short range. Many thanks to Lee Stoker for bringing his equipment to help with the planting. This was a significant project, and we appreciate everyone who contributed.
We also now have four new shipping containers that will be used for storage. Equipment and supplies from the old sheds will be moved into the new units as soon as possible.

Jim Luning signed 15 new members—welcome to LRGC!

Thank you to everyone who played a part in a successful month, helping to run events and keep the club operating smoothly.
We look forward to seeing everyone at upcoming events—be sure to check the calendar.

Happy Memorial Day!

Stay Well and Be Safe,
John Terrell

Hunter Trapper Education (HTE) Notice

by Frank Homer

Why Teach Hunter-Trapper Education?

Since 1959, hunting-related shooting incidents have declined drastically. Hunting is safe and getting safer, thanks to hunter education. By law, all first-time hunters and trappers, regardless of age, must successfully complete a six-hour hunter-trapper education training before they can buy a Pennsylvania hunting or trapping license. Individuals may take hunter-trapper education either through an in-person class or by completing an online class.

Legacy and Tradition!

During the last 15 years, Langhorne Rod & Gun Club has held more than 46 classes and has graduated over 1,140 students. We are actively seeking new Certified Hunter-Trapper Education Instructors to continue leading this important tradition of educating our future hunters and trappers. The Pennsylvania Game Commission is looking for knowledgeable and experienced hunters and trappers to teach both basic and advanced HTE programs. Volunteer instructors receive certification training, all necessary teaching aids, and materials including the easy-to-use, standardized curriculum.
Instructors must be at least 18 years old and have a high school diploma or GED. If leaving a legacy of safe, responsible, ethical hunting is important to you, please consider becoming a Certified HTE Instructor. All applicants must pass a criminal background check and child abuse clearance check. Contact the Pennsylvania Game Commission HTE Team at 717-787-7015, or at pgchuntereducation@pa.gov for questions.

LRGC is hosting the following classes this year: When: July 12, August 9, September 13, October 11, & November 8 (All 2nd Sundays) Where: Green Building Time: 8am to 3pm

10 Stand Sporting Clays, April 26th

Submitted by Les Trzesniowski

Having never participated in a shotgun event, I decided to check out 10-Stand Sporting Clays at the club.

The course consists of ten shooting stations set up in the field, with shooters moving through them in sequence. Each station presents one or more clay targets thrown at different angles, distances, and trajectories—designed to simulate real-world shooting scenarios and test a shooter’s adaptability and marksmanship.

Upon arriving at the Trap Field, I observed a group of shooters progressing through the stations in front of the green building. Targets were presented as either true pairs (thrown simultaneously) or report pairs (one thrown on pull, the second on the sound of the shot). The thrower occasionally varied target size and angle to increase the challenge.
Off to the side, a grill was set up with hamburgers and hot dogs, and coffee and other beverages were available inside. Some members were shooting, others observing, and a few were preparing for later rounds.

Overall, it felt like a relaxed, low-pressure, and enjoyable event—one that definitely caught my interest and may be worth trying in the future.

⭐ **Member Contribution**

From the Editors: The following is an article submitted by LRGC member Erik Cohen. Erik and his son recently travelled to Florida for an interesting (and perhaps a bit unusual?) hunting trip. Our thanks to Erik for reaching out and sharing this experience with our members!

We highly encourage all members to share your outdoor experiences with all of us. We would love to post articles about your hunting, fishing, or trapping experiences. Competitions and matches you’ve participated in at other clubs would be very much appreciated too.

We hope you enjoy the following article by Erik, and we hope to share a lot more like it as well.

Hunting in the Urban Jungle: The Invasive Iguanas of South Florida

Submitted by Erik Cohen

With few natural predators and the right climate, the population of the Green Iguana (and a few other species as well) has exploded in South Florida over the past 30+ years. The problems can primarily be traced back to uninformed pet owners who released their lizards, not realizing the impacts so many years later. At this point, Iguanas are considered an invasive species and are really causing havoc by damaging landscaping, burrowing in sea and canal walls among other things.

Despite the downside of this invasion, some creative fishing guides have turned this into a cottage industry of sorts and are now offering full or combination guided trips to hunt these invasive pests. My good friend, Capt. Justin Nguyen is one of those guides. Justin has been guiding fishing trips in South Florida for many years. His main business is hunting Peacock Bass and other exotic species in the Everglades from “Lady Jade”, his 16’ Skimmer Skiff.

A few years ago, Justin saw the demand for Iguana hunting and he now offers both full day hunting trips or “cast n’ blast” combo trips where you can do a little hunting and a little fishing on the same trip. All of these can be done from his boat.

Most of the Iguana population is near the human population. So you’re generally hunting in populated areas along canals in the Fort Lauderdale/Miami area. Because of that, you’re not using traditional fireams because if you miss, you can put a round in someone’s living room. All of the hunting is done with air/pellet rifles. Models like the Gamo Swarm Whisper and the Walther Reign 22 PCP are used in the hunt. Most of the iguanas set up on the banks of the canals and generally stay still while enjoying the Florida sun. Shots are taken from about 50-100 ft and a good head shot will take one out immediately. If you don’t achieve a clear head shot, often times a second shot can be taken if the reptile is stunned. If you miss, they generally get spooked and run up into the closest tree.

My son & I recently did a trip with Capt Justin and really enjoyed it. I’ve been fishing with Capt. Justin for years but this was actually my first Iguana hunt with him. My son enjoyed it a lot more than the fishing. We were able to get about 6 iguanas in a few hours as well as some really cool photos of our ‘catch’. During the hunt, multiple homeowners came out to thank us for the service. The Iguanas really can do some serious damage to peoples lawns, gardens and plant life around their house. Since we were there on vacation, there wasn’t really an option to take the meat with us but Capt. Justin (who is also a trained chef) sent me some lovely pictures the next day of the iguana stew that he made for his family and neighbors.

If you find yourself in South Florida and are looking for something really interesting to do for a day, I highly recommend giving this a try. You won’t be disappointed!
